Do you make New Years resolutions?  How long do they last? Or perhaps your resolution is to stop making New Year resolutions to avoid the guilt of sweeping them under the carpet in March. Here’s some great tips from Sue Fisk from Northern Beaches Nutrition

While the New Year is not the only time to make changes it is a great time to commit to some new ways of doing things. A fresh start if you will. The key is to make the changes manageable so that they are actually achievable. Here are 3 manageable changes that you can resolve to make in your New Year which will see you feeling healthier and better able to take on the other challenges that 2017 may throw your way.

Eat more fibre. An oldy but a goody. Increasing your intake of fibre can help to stabilise your blood sugar levels, help your body to get rid of toxins and keep you feeling fuller for longer. Eating a variety of plant-based foods will help you get enough fibre each day. This includes:

  • choosing wholegrain, wholemeal varieties of grain-based foods like bread and pasta.
  • enjoying a variety of wholegrains, quinoa, barley, polenta and buckwheat.
  • having two pieces of fruit and five servings of vegetables a day.

Aim to include more omega-3s in your diet. Increasing your intake of omega-3 fats in your diet can help reduce blood pressure, assist with joint pain and stiffness, improve your mood and is great for cardio-vascular health. Where to find them ? Aim to get 2 servings of fish each week – particularly oily fish like salmon, tuna and sardines. Not a fan of fish ? Other alternatives are walnuts and flax seed oil in your salads.

Discover new sources of protein. We all need to eat sufficient protein in each meal of each day. It helps us maintain our muscle mass and strength, keeps us feeling fuller for longer and helps maintain our metabolism. Good quality meats are great but try mixing it up with eggs, almonds, quinoa, lentils, greek yoghurt and tofu.
