A message from Kim Tiong, coach and NLP Therapist.
What is personal power? For me, it is being able to stand in your space, comfortable in the knowledge of who you are no matter what is going on around you, or who you are around. This is of course just my description and other people may describe it in other ways.
People oftentimes look outside of themselves for this personal power – it becomes a comparative thing. Can I be better than this person? If I act like that person I will be ok…
For me, it is about going inside ourselves and shining a light in the spaces and on the things we have pushed far down; the things we have long forgotten and perhaps feel ashamed and guilty about.
I believe it is only when we can truly make peace and own these parts of ourselves that we can truly find and step into our personal power.
Sound a little scary? It can be. Sound a little confronting? It can be. We often don’t feel comfortable talking about this stuff to our friends and family for fear of being judged. But what if it wasn’t just us? What if other people thought and felt the same way?
I found that when I started opening up about myself – my marriage problems with my ex-husband, how desperately unhappy I was in my corporate career, how desperately unhappy I was with my life and being me.. I found that’s when other people started opening up to me. By me voicing my greatest fears and being truly authentic and real, I was able to create a safe space for other people to do the same.
I’m not saying to go out and bare your soul to the world if this doesn’t feel right or resonate with you, it is just some food for thought. Perhaps we aren’t so alone in what we are thinking and feeling. Perhaps, just perhaps, other people feel and think it too.
