For many of us (1 in 4 women and 1 in 10 men) life can be anxiety provoking and depressing in equal measure. Specific yoga techniques can address these ‘temporary interruptions to flow’ experienced by individuals, and restore connection with our natural state of wholeness, where ease and joy arise.
In anxiety, there is generally an excess of the quality of movement and over activity in both the nervous system and the mind leading to agitation and restlessness. Feelings of urgency and fear can often accompany this. Conversely, in depression, there is often an absence of movement, or a feeling of inertia and heaviness on both a mental and physical level, often accompanied by feelings of frustration as any sense of progress feels impossible. For people experiencing a combination of both anxiety & depression, this can create a sense of ‘foot on the brake and the accelerator at the same time’.
Yoga techniques applied therapeutically can address the causes and the symptoms of anxiety & depression, through understanding the patterns an individual is engaged in habitually in every day activities, and the considered use of individually crafted experiential practices designed specifically to encourage new patterns of being which support wellbeing.
We are delighted to host facilitator Mischa Telford is an experienced yoga teacher and psychotherapist, with an interest in adapting yoga practices for the individual. Having suffered from depression herself, Mischa has experienced first hand the benefits of the therapeutic application of yogic techniques which alleviate symptoms of anxiety & depression and support the felt experience of wellbeing. Mischa is currently providing support for participants in a PhD based Clinical Trial studying the efficacy of Yoga for treatment of Anxiety & Depression.
