The yoga class for 8-12 year olds offers a playful way to work with traditional yoga postures and techniques. As it’s a time of lots of body changes, our classes aim to help the kids build healthy body image, become comfortable in their body and developing an appreciation for all the wonderful things their body does for them, (like building skill and coordination with yoga poses!).
The class might start with a reclining yoga pose for some breath awareness, as the teacher talks the students through letting go of the day, helping to develop their present moment awareness. She uses all sorts of yoga breathing techniques to help the tweens slow down their breathing which helps the calm the mind and whole nervous system. Students learn the nature of that busy ‘monkey mind’. The group practices limbering and longer holds in the postures, developing concentration and working on focus through the balance poses. They might have fun in a Mexican wave sun salutation and enjoy partner mirror posture work and bonding group exercises. Our tweens learn the full spectrum of postures, standing, floor work, inversions. They create their own sequences using various themes. For the relaxation, the group will learn more systematic body scanning techniques and cover various visualizations to help your tween find their happy place.
