The conscious mind makes up only a small part of the mind, and it is responsible for reasoning and understanding distance, time and change. That said, time is literally “how we perceive change”! The conscious mind is the part of your mind attempting to understand and process, say, what you are reading now. It involves reasoning, questioning, doubting and intellectual and critical thinking.

Within traditional ancestral lore the conscious mind is called the parent or the adult and the subconscious mind is called the child. The conscious mind has an understanding of time and that this or that event happened in your life long ago, it reasons that you should be over it by now because “time heals all wounds right?” But this is a big lie, it doesn’t!

Yes it is true that a healthy grieving process can take time and be helpful with talk therapy, but emotional trauma does not heal over time if it’s not ‘felt’ and processed within the body. Healing from suppressed emotional trauma, PTSD and mental illness is not an intellectual process, drugs don’t heal trauma and associated mental illness, and instead they suppress it. They prevent us from feeling and don’t allow us to feel to heal, nor move into feeling. This is why attempting to cure mental illness with drugging the mind is ridiculous and futile, because it does not get to the underlying issue which is trauma within the subconscious mind. Just as lobotomies didn’t fix mental illness in the old days neither do chemical lobotomies heal mental illness now!

Unlike the adult reasoning conscious mind the subconscious mind does not understand the concept of time! It is like a small child or as modern “pop psychology” calls it, “the inner child”. As the conscious mind realises that the war or traumatic experience you had as child or your past happened to you long ago and you should be over it by now, the subconscious mind does not understand this fact. As far as the subconscious is concerned the traumatic event didn’t happen years ago in your childhood or early adult hood, it happened about 5 minutes ago, or is actually still happening! This is one of the most important distinctions to understand how past traumas still effect every action we make today and how they are the “hidden drivers to our present actions”, and our mental suffering and physical pain.

This is why even though the trauma happened some time ago your body and mind through your subconscious still feel like it is still happening, and your body is still locked in the past. Years later after the traumatic experience you are still reacting to the trauma like it just happened without even consciously knowing about it, and it’s all subconscious patterning. This is why it is called “post traumatic” shock.

You are still living the post trauma and shock of it over the over, day in and day out and your conscious mind keeps thinking, “shit, I should be over this by now, it happened ages ago! It is completely unaware of why your mental and emotional being is in a state of suffering or keeps attracting to you experiences and relationships in your life that bring so much pain and suffering. You are not over it because the little inner child or subconscious mind is still contains the charge of emotional trauma, suffering like it happened yesterday. This is why all our unresolved traumas from our childhood and younger years are still haunting us. Time will never heal these wounds, only moving into feeling can!

Somehow during the process of moving into feeling, and feeling the both the gross physical and subtle energy body with the movements and process of what we call E-motion Yoga, the conscious and subconscious form a communion or communication bridge together. The adult holds the child’s hand and comforts it, just as an adult comforts a scared child and brings it to a place of safety affirming that it is safe and has survived after a minor fall.

This process has often be referred to in hypnosis circles as “the golden handshake”. This is a similar process to us waking up from a terrible nightmare only to take several minutes of time to realise that it was all just a bad dream, none of it was real or is now happening and begin the process of calming down and returning to a relaxed safe place, our comfortable safe bed. When we move into feeling with E-motion Yoga, we create this “golden handshake” and the wounded little part of us becomes heard, seen and honoured by the adult part of us and the true relationship of LOVE occurs within.

“E-motion Yoga is not really new, rather it is the oldest medicine on earth….the ecstatic shaking and tremoring of the human body which has roots in mother Africa and our origins. The Kalahari bush peoples call themselves the secret keepers of the shaking medicine and have prophesied that this medicine which has become lost will be rediscovered. The human ego’s worst fear is losing control of their environment and their emotions, and especially of their bodies. Yet in order to achieve the mysterious transcendental bliss state that is necessary to experience deep inner healing, we must surrender control; we must lose it to gain it! ”
