Christmas is a time for sharing – family, friends, fun and food. No-one expects you to be a nutritional saint but a few smart habits can help you avoiding carrying that Christmas cheer into the New Year.

  • Eat before you arrive. If you are heading out to Christmas cocktails have a small snack before you arrive so that you don’t arrive hungry. Grab a handful of nuts, some hommus and vege sticks or even a boiled egg to stave off hunger and avoid poor decisions.
  • Portion Size. If you’re a sucker for a buffet try piling up a smaller plate and load it up with mostly vegetables. Eat slowly and think twice before heading up for seconds – are you really still hungry ?
  • Christmas Cheer(s). Alternate alcoholic drinks with a water – sparkling with a squeeze of lemon or lime is a good alternative and be careful on the top ups. If you do overindulge try rehydrating with a green juice the next morning to replenish lost water, nutrients and support your liver. Try cucumber, baby spinach, green apple, lemon and ginger blended over ice.
  • Exercise. Summer is the perfect time to get outdoors. Try to maintain your regular routine or include some old favourites like cycling, swimming, walking or a game of frisbee. If you need inspiration ask for some classes as a Christmas gift.

Above all have a wonderful Christmas time with those you hold dear. Take time to rest and enjoy the joy of the season. Merry Christmas from Northern Beaches Nutrition.
