DIY self-care for the overwhelmed:

  • Switch off every day: dedicate time to be without devices, away from phones, electronics and distractions. Be still and just ‘be’ for a few moments and become aware of your breathing. Focusing on a simple aspect of yourself is a gentle way to calm the pace.
  • Take a hike: well maybe just a walk outdoors each day (not a real hike) and have a wander in the morning or at lunch, whenever works in with your routine. Being in nature has profound positive results, reducing feelings of stress, taking your focus to other aspects of the world around you, the beauty of nature and it’s restorative qualities. This combines ‘exercise’ with ‘being in nature’ which are both two key stress reduction tips I recommend!
  • Good night’s sleep: if you don’t have a ritual/routine before bed, create one as of now! Get into a few habits that you really enjoy and get rid of those devices. Reading for 15 minutes or so a night does not include any devices that have alerts or notifications on them. Ideally a magazine or book would be enough. This ritual will train the brain to really allow the sleep preparation to begin on a physical level.
  • Go for gold: even if you’ve never tried taking your awareness from your thoughts, into your body and breathing, here is a simple way to begin. For just a couple of short minutes, sit in a quiet place where you won’t be disturbed (can be a chair, your car, under a tree, anywhere!), and close your eyes, allow any parts of you upper body to just relax by feeling each one in your thoughts just for a moment and relaxing it, then do the lower half of the body, allow yourself to remain with eyes closed and melt a bit heavier into your seat, then just breathe in and out for about 3 counts each, breathing out for as long as you can and then breathing in. It doesn’t matter if you put your own spin on this! The whole idea is to slow down the chatter and circular thoughts in your mind, just taking your awareness into your body and breathing – just for a couple of minds. If you really want to ramp it up download an app like the popular Headspace one at the app store.
  • Get out: be with community, friends, anyone who lifts your feelings (doesn’t bring you down) and respects you for who you are. This is not a time to break new boundaries with those who you cannot just relax and be yourself with. No matter what is going on in life, try to take a realistic positive outlook. What could be a positive way to grow through this current experience? Is there someone you can talk to who you trust that can give you an objective view, maybe some positivity? Have a laugh over a meal or a movie and let go of that schedule just for a short while. You will feel so uplifted and energised, ready to work towards changing your life where you’d like to.
