Have you ever wondered if you are activating your core when you exercise?

We’re offering the chance to experience Real-Time Biofeedback using Ultrasonography. Just book into our 9.30am Pilates class on Tuesday 5th June and stay back after class to watch on screen how your different layers of core muscles contract and relax as you work them. Using ultrasound, you get immediate feedback on how to activate your core and the best tension to hold the contraction.

Local Chiropractor Georgina Smith, founder of Hands on Healthcare will be a special guest at Transform at 10.30 on June 5th.

Georgina writes: “At Hands On Health Care Clinic we use a real time ultrasound machine, so we can watch your different layers of core muscles contract and relax. Together we can see how well they hold the contraction while you exercise. You get immediate feedback on how to activate your core and the best tension to hold the contraction. Visually getting the feedback will help you to get the most out of your yoga and pilates. Using ultrasonic biofeedback has been shown to create significant improvements in Internal oblique abdominis and lumbar multifidus muscle after intervention (J Phys Ther Sci. 2016 Dec)”

What are we looking for when we use biofeedback?

Biofeedback helps us learn to control our muscles as we can visually see them doing the work. This assists us in making sure we are activating the correct muscles and not recruiting nearby muscles to do the work. We are looking the activation of external oblique, internal oblique and transverse abdominis. It is important to learn to activate these muscles and not our rectus abdominis known as our ‘six-pack’. Transverse abdominis is responsible for stabilising the lumbar spine and pelvic girdle. It is active during pelvic floor contraction and breathing. Transverse abdominis helps improve posture, neck position, muscle balance and stabilisation of the spine during movement.
